Well Pete M my first fishing was on Tooting Bec common as well. I was 8 so that would be in 1953. I used to fish it the same way. Fell in many times crossing to that island!!!!
It took me a while to catch something then one night after school I caught 3 tiny tench. Been hooked for life ever scince. Had my first pike 51/2 lbs. loads of skimmers, great place.
I also went back and saw what they did to the place. Shame really. Kids have nowhere to go now.
I was lucky and moved out of London to the top end of the Thames and have enjoyed catching loads of chub and barbel.
Moved back to Essex now cause of work so its all carp puddles but still have a lot of fond memories of the commons, tooting , wandsworth and clapham.

cant remember my first fishing trip but when we was young we used to go to Horncastle and trot maggots down for small trout, Can remeber the first Carp i struck into, I was about 8-9, real went screaming off and I thought i was goint to run out of line so stopped real and snapped off, Step dad give me bollocking for stopping real First ever night fishing with mates I had one match rod, we went for bream at Winters in East Holten, I got the biggest Swim feeder I could find, packed it full of groundbait and heaved it out with all my strength and snapped my rod on first cast Oh the stupididty. You guessed it we never caught anything all night.

earliest fishing memories eh? mid-sixties on the weaver, fishing with my dad and uncle, facing the salt works. my dad was a big roach fan, and would always catch a few, laying on at the rod end with a crow-quill,mind they only used to take me so i would go and get the tea from alfs cottage, funny how the sun always used to shine, but if it didnt my dad used to throw me an old tarpaulin that used to smell of oil "get under that and stop bleedin wingein or your not comin again"
