Midwest Anglers club preseason/friendly match results, Chicago river (March 12th)
What started out a nice mild day for March here in Chicago with the temps close to the 50's (f.) for the 10 anglers who turned up to fish this match changed at the halfway stage with a strong breeze blowing downstream and temps dropping by 15 degrees. Most anglers struggled for bites in the last hour and half...
17 year old Max Ford started his season off in style by winning the top overall on the day and adding another 1st place result to his growing list...
Max caught steadily from start to finish on peg 4 in section A with corn at 8 mts and and was even playing a carp at the end of the match which he unluckily didnt get into his landing net before the end of the match signal. Second place overall was Tracy Jordan with 3 carp on the feeder from peg 1 in section A. Third heaviest weight was also for section A with newcomer Darroslaz landing 2 carp for 20 lbs 5 ozs from peg 2. The winner in section B was Paul Wells with 2 carp including a nice mirror which dont show too much on the river here and some bluegills on the pole at 10 mts for a total weight of 18 lbs 7 ozs. Although the fishing was patchy today proberly again because of the drop in temps the fish seem to hold up in pockets this new stretch of river is one of the fairest we have fished yet for matches here with the winning weights coming of a different peg in every match so far over the winter league and the end pegs seem to be of no added advantage, each peg on this straight stretch is the same in depth and flow.
Well done also to Bob Anderson who after fishing the feeder for carp for almost 3 hours and not catching any switched to a float on a bolo rod to catch some bluegills close in and straight away hooked into an 11 lb carp which he landed after a long fight on a light rig and small hook... ;D
The golden peg (no. 6) was not won today and will be carried forward for the first league match. Fish caught today included Carp,Bluegills,Suckers, and gobies. Thanks to all that turned out and hopefully by our first league match on April 16th at Barth pond the weather will have warmed up a little.
