When I try to tension my elastic it either flys back at speed and hits the tip of the pole or a bit hangs out of the end. The only way I can get it to slowly creep all the way back is to use lubricant and then tension it. After a while the elastic then starts to fly back at speed and hit the pole again unless I add more lubricant. What am I doing wrong?

Lopz,
First thing to do when you get new elastic is to stretch it out along the full length of the elastic you've bought. do this in stages along it from one end to the other.
Secondly, measure out the elastic against the topkit you're elasticating, without stretching it. Just lie the topkit on the floor and lay the elastic next to it. Cut it at the length of the topkit.
Next, thread the elastic through the topkit and attach the bush / tie the "crowsfoot" (whichever you prefer).
Then, using a bung that allows you to adjust the length of "active" elastic, tie on the bung using a double overhand knot, and trim off any excess at the knot. Wind the elastic around the bung, and adjust to suit.
Having the extra elastic around the bung will allow you to remove the top 2" of elastic , which is always the most susceptible to damage and will also allow you to change the tension of the elastic.
Job done, and hopefully to your satisfaction.

Lopz, Further to stevemac's sensible advice, try to make sure that no bits of grit,or general crap, stick to the elastic while you are measuring it out.
Also the job is easier if the inside of the top kit is completely dry, before fitting the elastic.(leave it on a radiator for a while).Failing that use loads of lub after threading the elastic.
I reckon if you don't have the bungs that let you store a few turns, you should think about getting them, cos they would most likely sort your problem.

Sounds as if you need to use a larger bore bush lopz, even if this means that you have to cut your tops back a bit further.
