Hi all,I help run the Mojacar Angling Club in Almeria and me and a few mates get up the River Ebro as many times a year as we can.If we can help with any tips on fishing the Embalses in our little bit of Spain please ask away.As for tips on the Ebro there will be a lot of experts out there that know a lot more than us but saying that we can all offer an insight.
I write articles for some of our free rags in Almeria and these are aimed at ex-pats so what I'll do is to copy over an update now and again what is going on in the club.
I'll start with the following:
Mojacar Angling Club (MAC) News
4 MAC members fished on Wednesday at Calasparra.Casa Verde Barry had only 6 fish but one was 5 to 6lb which is the biggest anyone from the club has landed there.Zurgena Phil caught most, about 12 fish up to 3lb.New member Gordon and Richard from Garrucha both blanked.Barry blames low catches on the much lower water temps and so the winter could be tough.
Dumper Craig and Beachcomber John (Me) had a good trip up the Ebro and stayed two days longer than intended (Not unusual for us) It was very cold up them there mountains and strong winds in the afternoons made fishing difficult. We not only had to contend with that but the wind broke away surface weed which floated through our swims taking lines with it.Fish caught were certainly not the crazy fighters they were back in the autumn but at the same time seemed more powerful and were harder to get to the surface.
Dumper Craig twice beat his personal best (PB) with a Common Carp of 17.5lb followed by a 25.75lber.He bagged a total of 12 Commons over the 8 days fishing, the smallest was 9lb,
I caught a total of 28 Common Carp from 8lb to 25.75lb equalling Dumper's but not my own PB of 27.5lb.
We tackled up much heavier than our first two trips but even this was not enough to land the big Catfish we hooked into. These monsters just sit on the bottom and a boat, broom handle rods and 150lb is required.I fished 3lb Carp rods with straight through 15lb line and lost many big Carp that ran into and over the large rocks that form the ledges down to the original river before the reservoir was made.Still heavier tackle must be taken next time.
Talking of next time another trip has been organised by MAC for the 19th March 2006 and well as the 21st May one. Both are for a weeks fishing!!!!!! although members are welcome to stay for whatever period of time they wish of course.I hear one member is planning on staying a month.Anyone interested should get in touch with me at the Beachcomber Bar on Mojacar Playa or telephone 950 473 099.
Future one day coarse fishing outings are every Wednesday and further details can be obtained as above.Fishing on a Friday as well is also being discussed by some MAC members and further info will be available soon.
Not much happening on the beachfishing front I'm afraid, just a few tiddlers being caught if reports are to be believed.
Mike's boat out of Garrucha is doing ok with plenty of small fish and Bonitos up to 2 foot long.
Up to date news on Andalucia and Murcia fishing licences.
Andalucian coarse licences can now be obtained from the ministry (Medio Ambiente) but an in date English coarse fishing licence must be produced (Original document) If you are not going to the UK get someone to get it from the Post Office and post it to you.A copy of your NIE document (Basically means tourists cannot have a licence!!) We are working with the ministry on the latter but for now this is as it stands.A copy of your passport or residencia.A one year Spanish hunting and fishing insurance policy document is required and if you cannot add this to your house insurance then "Girl Friday" can obtain one when in Almeria. It is not economical to get your own coarse licence as the ministry will ask for an officially translated document of your English fishing licence making it cheaper for you to get Girl Friday to do the job for you.Cost are roughly as follows, 5 year licence inc Trout 40 Euros,Insurance and fee 30 Euros and the fee for getting the licence is 30 Euros.Total 100 Euros.
Andalucian beach and boat fishing licences are obtainable fairly easily with only a passport copy or residencia being required. If you cant be bothered going to Almeria yourself then "Girl Friday" will get both of them for you for 30 Euros fee (Or 20 if she is getting your coarse licence from a different Almeria ministry/bank etc .) Plus the 5 and 10 Euro licence costs.Total cost 45 (Or 35) Euros for both 3 year licences.
Murcia coarse fishing licences are much easier to obtain with only your passport (photo copy only required if someone is going for you) and Spanish address being required. If you dont want to go to Murcia yourself then "Boy Friday" will go for you, 5 year licence inc Trout and fee 80 Euros. You can also get a licence by visiting "Todo Pesca" fishing tackle shop in El Punto, cost €36 with a copy of passport or residencia and your address in Spain inc most importantly your postcode. (Boy Friday can provide an address if you dont have one.) The main hassle and cost with the tackle shop option is having to return to the tackle shop 15 days later to collect your licence.
For further information on any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Beach Bar on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099.
If I am unavailable or away call Craig on 697288186.If he is not available then if the question is about Wednesday coarse fishing venues and meeting time ring Barry on 950137110.For boat fishing info please ring Mike on 647803030.
