I spent the new year period in Sunny Spain and whilst over there I had a day out on a reservoir with Beachcomber John and some members of the Mojacar Angling section. What a cracking day we had too. While some of you guys were out in upto -10 degrees we were basking in the sunshine of +22 degrees!
Mojacar is in the Almeria region and the club boasts some 50 members, mainly ex brits who now work/reside in Spain. They get together at least once a week throughout the year and travel far afield for some sport. As you can imagine coarse fishing venues are very few and far between due to the climate. Apart from the Ebro we hardly hear of any Spainish fishing exploits back here in the UK. But believe me after my first such visit to a coarse water I was very impressed.
Beachcomber John introduced me to some of the members who we met at the venue. One such member, Barry Stokoe, leant me a pole for the day and a rig to get me started. Soon after the start I was into an F1 that went about 3lb and do they fight! The swim was about 14 feet deep at 8 metres and full of large rock. Playing the fish was some what alien to me as you HAD to keep the pole high to bring the fish to the surface very quickly away from rocks and underwater trees. The reservoir that we were at was called the ARGOS, which basically is a man made puddle that serves the area of Murcia with its water supply. So as you can imagine the place is basically a flooded area of land, sunken Islands, trees and I would imagine buildings some where amongst it.
After having a couple of fish, Barry broke his spare pole and being the gent I am handed him back his pole so that he could continue with his session. BC John then kindly loaned me a rod/reel and method feeder for a chuck out into the deeper waters, and I mean deeper some 30 feet or so deeper. Never the less the fish kept coming often pulling the 3lb test curve specimen rod right round off the rest. Everyone caught fish including the Spanish, who for some reason like to eat samples of their catch. Don't agree with that myself but afterall it is there country and culture so who am I to argue?
Like I say a cracking day was had by all and I'm looking forward to another session or two there with the lads again, they made me feel very welcome.
BC John has found some more waters over there that he is going to explore, he hasn't told me where yet, but the water boasts Barbel to 40lb, yeah thats right 40lb! The local town hall has pictures of captures of these monsters, so if the barbel go to this size what are the carp like and what else is in there?
I must say for my first adventure into fishing Spanish waters I was impressed, so impressed I'm going to give it another go very, very soon in the mean time I will get some pictures sorted and will post them on here when I get chance.
