Hi everyone, I've been going fishing in Cyprus for the last 12 years with Bigrich, have fished the matches on the Dams for Carp & Roach, the fishing can be superb with some of the hardest fighting fish you could wish to catch , the main bait is sweetcorn, pellet & breadcrumb, by the bucket full. All the Dams are in the mountains, they are usually deep & crystal clear & the scenery can be breath taking, the night life is excelant , the restaurants out of the tourist area are very good value, you can eat youself silly for under £10s including drinks, 2 festivals a year May & October, but you can fish all year round, need to have a licience £20 per year which lets you fish on all the Dams. All you need tackle wise is a good strong tipping rod & a robust pole that your not to bothered about breaking, minimum line strength 02-8lb hook sizes 14s upwards for Roach & Carp, barbed hooks for the Roach so you don't bump them off on the heavy gear. Tipicle day on the Dam is flat calm till about 10am then the breeze gets up for rest of the day, temp usually mid 70s - high 80s .

This was my report from the October festival. It does explain what a fantastic place Cyprus is to go fishing - if you get the chance to wet a line there in the sun - take it!

Cyprus Angling Festival
THIS unique event held on the first two weeks of May and October on the natural reservoirs of Cyprus combines keen competition for carp, roach and skimmers in a holiday atmosphere on the sunshine island. The ever-changing levels are a constant headache for organisers setting out sections on the sometimes difficult terrain. From Limasol, anglers would fish four different waters, including Kouris, Yermasoyia, Achna and Polemedia. No livebaits are allowed with corn the mainstay together with pellets, paste, hemp and luncheon meat. This year it would not be the bags of carp making the headlines, although Achna and Polemedia duly obliged with countless 100lb bags, but the incredible roach sport. A solid start to proceedings, due mainly to the positive pre-festival baiting of all sections, saw nets of roach between 20lb and 40lb-plus almost commonplace from Yermasoyia and Kouris. The superior fighting qualities of the wild carp here are always a talking point but these were shadowed by nets of redfins taken towards the end of the first week between 50lb and 70lb. Achna improved as the week progressed with Mick Risby recording a festival best weight of small carp of 154lb 4oz to paste. Regular to Cyprus for many years Rob Heath was a very popular winner on week one with a five-point 262-14-0 final tally. A massive 74 competitors did battle in week two. Carp nets on Polemedia and Achna were consistently good but it was roach again that played a major part in the final placings, which again went right to the last day. Young Alan Rowe put together a string of solid results but a second placed 43lb of roach on Kouris on the final day was not enough to stop festival winner John Holdsworth getting the verdict after a superb display at Achna saw him take 117-4-0 of carp to 1lb 8oz on the long pole. Anglers wishing to fish in May 2006 will be required to pay a £50 deposit. The focal point for anglers in Limasol is the Highlander Pub and Apartments 00357 996 04555. Transport is essential and Limini Car Hire are very reliable 00357 224 29457. Result, Week 1: 1 R Heath, Chestnut Pool, 5; 2 M Risby, Gilders Tackle, 7; 3 N Rymer, Ultimate Henglesport, 7; 4 S Tyler, Popletts, 7. Week 2: J Holdsworth, Tri-Cast Calder, 3 pts; 2 A Rowe, Corporate Edge, 6; 3 A Barker, Sensas Walton, 7; 3 N Rymer, Ultimate Henglesport, 8. Highlander Trophy: D Lawrence, Ripley Robbers, 58-12-0.
