hi guys
i am in a match fishing club here in the usa....we have a fairly active match calender here for most of the year(the winters are a little cold ) but this year are attempting to run a small winter league on a stretch of river here which gets warm water fed into it and doesnt freeze over...it has great fishing here for carp mostly of all sizes to 25 lbs and can be caught on the feeder and pole at 5 to 8 mts....my question here is how do you guys prevent your elastics from freezing there...i fished here one day below freezing and the water on it formed into ice as i played a fish...it still worked ok but was all frayed at my next outting and i had to change it...is there anything i can put on it to prevent this that also doesnt damage it.....

Hi Matchanglingdausa,
Welcome to the site . Always nice to hear from our fellow anglers from across the pond. We already have had ex- pat match anglers contributing to the site & even meeting up & fishing with us when visiting back home.
We dont fish that often in daytime temps below freezing therefore causing the ice build up as you describe . The temps fall below freezing during the night time here in UK & rise again in the day allowing fishing to continue unhindered. The exception to this is if an early srart is made , saye b4 9am when the air temp is likely to be still below freezing point.
The possible solution is to smear Glycerine onto your elastic which I used to use regulary on Rod & Line to prevent the rod rings freezing up . Must admit I cannot recall ever experiancing the same problem whilst pole fishing as matches in UK tend to start when the temps have climbed above freezing.
Gllyerine is a clear odourless but somewhat sticky loquid found in our 'drugstores' & is normally used in cake making. Its sticky nature might cause problems with the elastics movement through the pole but it definetly stops water freezing .

try 'son of a gun' lubricant....
for cars, so guess its not going to freeze...

Welcome to the site matey. You have got them thinking now, myself always used glycerin on rod and line like Scatty said but never thought about pole elastic does any body now if silicon freezes. Reason is Ive just had 4 spray tins given me (big ones).
Next time dip tops in the water it his warmer than the air around it if you see what I mean

Haven't had the elastic freeze in a top kit yet, but then again will perhaps tell you after this weekend.   |

it happened to me on the grand union in slough on sunday. it was freezin to my pole while on me roost and it was freezin to the inside too. i just tried to keep it out of the water!

thanks guys for the help...  ....we had a knock up on the river last sun but the weather was usally mild for a change.....  ....hope we get a few more for the winter league like it...anyway i posted the results in the match section...cheers |

anyone tried lubing the elastic with antifreeze? I know it sounds daft but it might work :¬)

hi Fred will let you know tomorrow....we have a match in the morn ....there is 6 " of snow on the ground,more showers tomorrow and the temps are to stay below freezin all day...am going to try a few different things...washing liquid...antifreeze...glycerine....and will see what works best...it should still fish ok thou....50 to 60 lbs to win in 3 hours i think... |

Antifreeze is a glycol based product so should work, should be ok for rubber as it goes through car system hoses still I wait with baited breath :¬)
